Safety is a top priority at Girls Empowerment Middle School (GEMS), a tuition-free public charter school in the heart of Las Vegas. When students feel safe and supported, they are better able to learn and thrive. That's why we take various steps to keep our students safe and secure at school.
A Strong Sense of Community
We create a strong sense of community at GEMS. One of our most powerful tools for building community is our Social Emotional Empowerment class. Together, students learn to resolve conflict and build positive self-esteem. As they learn together these students practice their developing skills and build the foundations of a strong, diverse, and functional community. The sense of belonging and support that results from this important work helps create a safe learning environment.
Our community does not end with the four walls of the school. We very consciously develop relationships with community leaders and invite them to meet with our students. These connections are vital for empowering our students to become strong leaders themselves.
Small Class Sizes
Our small class sizes (no class is more than 17 students!) are another way we create a safe learning experience. With fewer students in each classroom, our teachers can give individual attention to every student and address any issues or concerns they may have. This level of individual attention allows us to offer a rigorous academic program that emphasizes critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. Our curriculum is designed to challenge and engage students, helping them develop the knowledge and skills they need to excel in high school and beyond.
We place a strong emphasis on creating welcoming and inclusive classrooms where each student feels valued and supported. Our teachers and staff members know our students on a personal level. In a school where everyone knows your name, it is impossible to get lost or fall through the cracks.
